A uniquely rare drum, this No. 400 Supraphonic is pre-serial, yet still Chrome over Aluminum. THis is significant because Ludwig started serializing their drums in 1963, but also switch ed from Chrome/Brass to Chrome/Aluminum on their Supraphonics that same year! That means this Supra sits in a short time period, almost certainly in '63, just BEFORE Ludwig started serializing drums, but just AFTER they made the switch to Aluminum for the Supraphonic. And guess what, it sounds fantastic too!
This Supra is in fantastic condition for it's age. There is minor pitting throughout on the hardware, and a small bit of flaking of the chrome on a couple spots on the shell. For the most part very clean! Top hoop is the original chrome-over-brass, however the bottom hoop is steel and likely non-original. Snare wires look to be original, one strand is slightly bent and the wires as a whole don't sit super cleanly in the snare bed. Throw moves clean and smooth, as well as all of the tension rods.
A unique collector's item and an awesome sounding drum!
